THE

CHALLENGE

The fast paced nature of a rugby sevens broadcasting means that the traditional model of stats graphics used in 15-a-side coverage cannot simply be replicated in the 7’s format.  Statistical trends differ in this shortened version of the game and because the time restrictions of on-air display, there is an even greater importance placed on its ability to be easily understood and consumed.

THE

SOLUTION

After a review of the limitations of the current model, The Breakdown put forward a possible solution for their consideration which focussed on refining the volume, complexity, and style of information broadcast while retaining the maximum effectiveness through dynamic design and imagery.

It was proposed that the new graphics look move away from a style that filled the screen with multiple numbers and tables of data which had no any immediate relevancy, to a system whereby more visual identifiers such as team logos and player images are used to give the audience context, and time coded statistical trends replace outdated historical totals.

THE

RESULT

As a client of World Rugby’s new broadcast graphics and stats provider, The Breakdown is collaborating with Ignite TV in the creation of a new style of data capture, graphical display and analysis. Working alongside commentators and producers, The Breakdown offers a new approach to statistical analysis and information distribution on the World Rugby Sevens Series.

Stats and graphics can make a good sports story in print or on air really hum. That’s not the bland everyday variety but a specific stat, a well-researched zinger that can illuminate. Kate gets the picture quickly and delivers quickly which is what every time-stressed sport journo...me…wants.
