Combined Men’s and Women’s top three finishes in France since 2012, the host country for surfing at the 2024 Summer Olympics

THE

CHALLENGE

The Breakdown was approached by Surfing Australia to provide detailed performance stats and contest metrics for development of their Olympic team ahead of the Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024 Summer Olympics funding pitch. They required detailed comparisons and rankings to project where the Australian team sits in terms of medal opportunities and podium finishes.

THE

SOLUTION

The Breakdown provided comprehensive research and analysis examining the current situation in 2019, using contest data and performances against other competition nations to provide and accurate representation of Australia’s chances at bronze, silver and gold at Tokyo 2020. There was also opportunity to identify future talent pathways through lower tier events to project the coaching pathways needed to bring the next generation of talent up to the Olympic level of performance required to medal in France in four years time. Visual display of the data was paramount to Surfing Australia’s requirements, as they need a clear performance indicator of where Australia currently ranks compared to other Olympic surfing nations, both as a combined team and as individuals.

THE

RESULT

The Breakdown was able to contribute to the breadth and depth of Surfing Australia’s pitch for funding at the Australian Institute of Sport ahead of the next two Olympic cycles.

Stats and graphics can make a good sports story in print or on air really hum. That’s not the bland everyday variety but a specific stat, a well-researched zinger that can illuminate. Kate gets the picture quickly and delivers quickly which is what every time-stressed sport journo...me…wants.
